It’s right around the corner–have you realized what that might be?
Labor Day Weekend, folks! Prime time for a cookout from our handy, dandy cookbook. (For those who won’t be at DragonCon or WonderCon or the like, of course.)
Now, usually I would advise making 1 “complex” dish and keeping the accompaniments simple to make life (and the dishes) easier. But on holiday weekends I tend to throw that rule/guideline/suggestion right out the window and pull out all the stops–especially if guests are expected! After all, if friends are coming by for a Monday cookout, you’ve got time on Sunday to make some things ahead. But if you’re more into partying on Saturday or Sunday, you’ve got Monday to recover. And eat leftovers.
It’s all good is what I’m getting at.
So, what sorts of recipes might you want to check out for this weekend’s end-o-summer bash?
The Pesto Burgers (page 174) come immediately to mind, with the Non-Baked Beans (page 89), Pineapple Poppy Seed Coleslaw (page 175), and/or the Redskin Potato Salad (page 185) to go with. Grilled Corn (page 173) also wouldn’t hurt, if you’ve got fresh corn available to you.
And there’s always the Spice-Rubbed Ribs (page 176) if you’re in a prehistoric kind of mood. (Those scalloped potatoes–along with several other recipes–didn’t make it into What to Feed Your Raiding Party -proper. Guess I’ll have to remedy that with an expansion–what what? Oh, yes, there’s more goodness where this first volume came from, just no ETA just yet.)
I admit, I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the long-weekend holidays, and already have a big hunk of good ground beef waiting to be pattied-up and ciabatta rolls ready to be toasted. Since our usual gaming day was shifted from last weekend to this, it seemed only fitting to cookout with burgers for our gaming meal.
Of course, with the weather forecast being what it is, currently, it might be more of a cook-in, but it’ll still be tasty. Never underestimate what a broiler can do, if a grill isn’t available!
In other news, Todd got his first session of
herding cats DMing DDE: Council of Spiders under his belt, last night, and we were in rare form. I have to say, playing a magic-user might be fun. I didn’t get hit once tonight–I don’t even thing I was aimed at!–and I accomplished part of my super-secret mission, too! There seems to be a bit of radio silence going on online about the house-missions, so I’m not going to spoil it, either, but I will say I didn’t expect the first part to happen so quickly. Now it’s just a matter of making it to the finish line, eh?
