It’s a holiday, and even though it’s rainy and dreary in N.Florida right now, I still don’t expect folks to be online, skimming blogs today or throughout the weekend. So don’t expect a magnum opus or anything out of this post!
In fact, a friend is coming over soon to celebrate said independence by observing and discussing the integration of different cultures among various evolving societies (i.e. we’re gonna marathon Deep Space 9 via Netflix and engage in alcohol-fueled riffing thereof).
Actually, I think a series like Star Trek is pretty perfect for 4th of July entertainment. Next Gen, at least, presents an evolved civilization free of so many cultural ills, going out for research and exploration. It’s not perfect, but it’s a damn sight better than what we’ve got now and I like to believe some of us, at least, are working towards a future like that one day.
Which reminds me of a funny thing that happened at Ancient City Con. On Saturday I was wearing my Star Trek Chef Coat Cosplay™ and decided to throw on my Vulcan ears and spend some extra time on my makeup that morning. This was the result:
When a con-goer comes up (with his friend who’d stopped by the table the night before) and, bless his heart, asks me why I’d want to be a redshirt?!
I tried to explain that I wasn’t a “redshirt” but an officer (a rear admiral thankyouverymuch–though I still need to add the gold trim to the piping on my jacket) but he just wasn’t getting it. Must have been a Star Wars fan… What can you do?
Okay, folks, go out and have a fun and safe 4th of July. Or stay in a play games and cook yummy food. Either way, enjoy your day and we’ll see you on the flipside!
